2007: Site Update History

Only six updates in total. This was the year in which the updates really slowed down and three major factors played a role in this:
1. I got a good full time job.
2. The official Dreamcast PSO servers closed.
3. Rodenta's Web Hosting closed... without any notice.

A job alone had never posed a hinderance to me preparing site updates in the past, but actually having a decent job made me more focused on work than ever before. Coupling that with the sadness and depression of having lost the official Dreamcast (and Game Cube) PSO servers resulted in a lack of initiative when it came to the site. And to top all that off, Rodenta, who had hosted PSO Archive ever since it moved from Geocities years back, closed his hosting service without any forewarning.

The web host's closure was both the worst and one of the best things that has ever happened to the site. Making this site was my sole reason for studying HTML. Most of my site building knowledge having come from a single, rather old, book and not having anyone to discuss the subject with in depth had led me to make a huge design flaw in the site. The real issue was that this "flaw" was such that I had absolutely no perception that a problem actually existed. Ever since the site's creation I had been using "Absolute Paths" in every single page of HTML. The flaw with this is that if you do ever move your site you have to change virtually every link on every individual page! Well by this point in time the site already consisted of more than six-hundred pages! It ended up taking about three months to switch all of the "Absolute paths" over to "Relative Paths" but, the end result means that should the site ever need to be moved again it can be done without much trouble.

Another good thing about the web hosting change is that Sega Forums has been a far more reliable host. There may not be as much space for expansion, but the server rarely has any downtime or access issues.

Announcements:

Sega, on December 8th, 2006, announced that the official servers for all Dreamcast and Game Cube versions of PSO are scheduled to close at 11:59 p.m. (Japanese Time) on March 31st, 2007. That's 9:59 a.m. EST (GMT -5) on March 31st, 2007.
Sega has also announced that, the Game Cube versions of PSO will be free to play online during the final month, March 2007.
PSO Archive has moved to a new webhost, obviously. The old webhost, Rodenta's Free Hosting, closed its service without any warning which has left the site offline for about a month. Despite the suddenness of the closure, I'd like to thank Rodenta for the two years that he did host the site.
Not all of PSO Archive is back online yet. I'm taking this oppurtunity to rework some of the file structure. Also, it takes a good bit of time to upload files when you only have a dial-up ISP.
In other good news, the Guestbook works again and we now have Forums, courtesy of the new webhost. If you'd like to contact me through the Forums, my username is Tweeg.

The final week of Dreamcast and Game Cube PSO's official online existence is about to begin. How will you spend this time?
Not all of PSO Archive is back online just yet. At present, most of the picture indexes and all of the the videos are still not back up. I hope to have everything back up and running the first week of April. I could have it done much sooner, but the experience of playing PSO on the official servers tragically won't last forever.

Announcements:

The Era has ended! On April 3rd, 2007, at 1:45 AM EST the last of Sega's legendary "SNAP" Dreamcast game servers went offline. This concluded the last of Sega's official support for an online Dreamcast title.
The JP DC PSO servers and all of the GC PSO servers went offline exactly as scheduled by Sega said they would, at 11:59:59 PM JST (Japanese Standard TIme) on March 31, 2007. For those use to the EST time stamp normally used here at PSO Archive that was 9:59:59 AM EST on March 31, 2007.
The EU DC PSO servers ended oddly, they closed twice! The first time they went offline at 11:45 PM EST on April 1, 2007. The servers then came back online roughly five hours later and went offline for the last time at 1:45 AM EST on April 3, 2007.
Dreamcast PSO servers peaked at an estimated seven-hundred players online, just moments before the JP servers went offline! This was the highest number of players that had been online at any one point time in years! When the DC EU servers went offline on April 1st there were only eight players remaining online. Sadly, I do not know how many players were online for the second and final DC PSO EU server closure.
Most of PSO Archive is now back online. As of tonight there are only six picture indexes remaining to be re-uploaded. Despite how low a number that may seem, there are, in fact, 600 HTML files associated with those indexes left to be modified. That said, it will probably take another week, maybe two, to finish modifying and uploading everything. New content will once again be added regulary once all the pre-existing content has been restored.
Notice to everyone: If you send me an e-mail please put "PSO" in the subject line. This way you're e-mail won't accidently get deleted or sent to the Bulk Mail folder.

Announcements:

Not only is all post site move content back online, but Index #11 has been added too! That's 50 new pictures for your viewing enjoyment!
With the closure of the official servers behind us, the backlog gap on the in-game pictures will gradually narrow as new Indexes are added. All in-game pictures from here on out are at 640x480 resolution. The highest quality pics have yet to be revealed. And, don't let the vast time span that Index #11 covers get you down, there are still hundreds of pictures to come.
As to the matter of update frequency. I will attempt to make two site updates per month, but can not guarantee it will be that frequent as I do have a full time job.
