Fully three years before the actual game was made available in North America, Sentai Filmworks licensed and released this, the first, anime series based on PSO2. And thus, the two format releases of this anime series became the first PSO2 merchandise officially avaiable in North America. The DVD release features all twelve episodes on three discs, while the Blu-Ray release features all twelve episodes on two discs.

This was notably the first anime based on any game within the overall Phantasy Star franchise. The series was produced by TBS Animation and debuted on the TBS television network January 7th, 2016 (Winter 2016 season) in Japan, and wrapped up airing of the twelfth episode on March 31st, 2016.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation stands out as a oddity to those of us outside of Japan who had yet to play PSO2. Its' story, as we learned once we were finally able to play PSO2, is set as a sort of prequel to Episode 4's story arc, thus in Japan it would have served as a hype building lead-in to the then soon to be released Episode 4 game expansion. But here (U.S.A.), we got it three years before the game itself, with no context to comprehend anything. This anime was thus presenting viewers unfamiliar with PSO2 a disconcerting isekei-esque story poorly representing the actual game itself. The reality of what happens in this anime, and in Episode 4 proper, feels like deep plot elements one might expect to hear from some anonymous guest during a late-night fringe radio talk show moreso than something from PSO, which is to say it feels very out of place.
